Return of Security Deposit

At the end of the tenancy, a landlord must return the tenant's security deposit or give the tenant a written explanation as to why the deposit or any part of it has not been returned, Minnesota Statute 504B. 178.   Interest on the security deposit is calculated as simple noncompound interest per year.  The interest rate is 3% per year until August 1, 2003 and 1% per year thereafter.

The landlord must make the refund within 21 days after the day the tenancy ends. The tenant must give the landlord a forwarding address. If the tenant has to leave because the building was condemned, the landlord must return the deposit within five (5) days after the tenant leaves, again the tenant must give the landlord a forwarding address or delivery instructions. This does not apply if the condemnation was the tenant's fault through his/her malicious or irresponsible conduct.

                                       2024 " HOUSING IS A HUMAN RIGHT"

Across the Twin Cities Metro area, in cities across the state, and country, there is a shortage of affordable rental housing. The costs of rents keep skyrocketing, and families are evicted unjustly and displaced from their homes and communities daily.

Renters and housing advocacy organizations across Minneapolis and St. Paul in September of 2016 and 2017 joined together to raise our voices on the Green Line, at corporate rental offices, at schools, parks and at City Halls to demand policy changes.

As of 2023, Families are still struggling to keep stable housing.  There continues to be a surge families/individuals struggling in with making a choice how to pay the rent, utilities and keep food on the table. Even with all the new " Tenant Landlord Laws" that goes into effect January 2024 still do not solve problem with families/individuals keeping their homes.   IN 2016 Community Stabilization Project & Organizations across the Twin Cities took a stand with renters as they shared their stories at the State Capitol Rotunda and once again call for policy solutions to assure that the rising costs of rent can be stabilized, that renters are protected from being 'PRICED OUT', and that homes for all are safe and healthy.

We need homes for people not for profit!  PLEASE CALL (651) 225-8778 TO PLEDGE TO TAKE A STAND!!!!
